THE FINDS

COSTA DE PRATA – between Porto and Lisbon

Infinite white beaches for surfers and lovers of the immense blue, and secret coves that are hard to find and even harder to leave.

  • Dunas de São Jacinto: A pristine, untamed expanse where golden dunes meet the raw Atlantic. It’s an escape into pure, windswept nature.
  • Nazaré: The undisputed home of the world’s biggest waves. Beyond the colossal surf, it retains the rugged charm of a traditional fishing village.
  • Óbidos (Respiro Stop): Not a beach, but a mandatory detour. This impeccably preserved medieval walled town offers a cultural pause before the next coastal thrill, Peniche.
  • Baleal & Peniche (Praia da Mexilhoeira): A premier surf Mecca, offering diverse breaks for every skill level. Peniche delivers urban surf vibes; Baleal, its island-like counterpart, adds unique character.
  • Foz do Sizandro & São Julião: Rugged, open beaches popular with surfers, often less crowded than their famous neighbors. A raw, authentic coastal experience.
  • Magoito: Distinct for its dark, iodine-rich sand and dramatic cliffs. A unique geological wonder, surprisingly therapeutic.
  • Sintra-Cascais Wild Coast (Aguda, Adraga, Guincho): The grand finale. From the dramatic, secluded beauty of Praia da Aguda and Adraga with their iconic rock formations, to the vast, windswept expanse of Guincho. This final trio embodies untamed Atlantic power, perfect for dramatic photos, powerful surf, or simply feeling the raw energy of the ocean.

VICENTINA, the freedom enclave – south of Lisbon

South of Lisbon, the coastline morphs to a vast, untamed expanse, a true frontier for those who seek raw nature and expansive solitude. From the privileged Costa Caparica to Europe’s last wild coast, Costa Vicentina, this is the happy few freedom enclave.

  • Arrábida Natural Park (Portinho da Arrábida, Galapinhos, Figueirinha): The best escape from the Atlantic chill . These sheltered coves of startling turquoise waters and fine white sands are reminiscent of a Mediterranean hideaway. A local secret demanding navigation but truly rewarding.
  • Comporta & Carvalhal: The playground for Lisbon’s understated elite. Miles of pristine, golden sand stretch endlessly, backed by dunes and pine forests. Here, rustic chic reigns, and privacy is paramount.
  • Vila Nova de Milfontes (and nearby Malhão): A vibrant hub on the Alentejo coast, offering a mix of river beach charm and wild Atlantic surf. Praia do Malhão, just south, is the best expression of the region’s raw, untamed beauty.
  • Zambujeira do Mar: Perched atop dramatic cliffs, this village offers stunning views and powerful waves. Its compact beach is an iconic postcard of the rugged Alentejo coastline.
  • Odeceixe (Praia de Odeceixe Mar): river meets ocean. This unique, crescent-shaped beach is one the Vicentine Coast’s most prized secrets.

ALGARVE – The south coast

Probably the most beautiful beaches in the world. An incredible scenery crafted by golden cliffs, taking on fantastic shapes and hiding mysterious corridors sculpted by ocean waves, leading you from one turquoise cove to the next golden bay. It’s truly Heaven on Earth for photographers and romantics – and utterly addictive to us all. This is epic.

  • Bordeira, Amado: expansive, windswept beaches near Carrapateira and surf havens, they are marking the Algarve’s true wild frontier.
  • Praia da Mareta (Sagres): Framed by the rugged cliffs of Sagres, this sheltered beach offers a unique blend of calm waters for swimming and consistent swells for learning to surf. Easily accessible, it has an undeniable wild spirit and great food at its chiringuito.
  • Lagos’ Labyrinths: Moving east, beaches become intricate natural galleries. Golden cliffs cradle intimate coves like Dona Ana and Camilo, accessible via winding wooden staircases. And while not a beach for lounging, the colossal Benagil Cave, with its unique skylight, is only accessible by licensed tour, still worth it
  • Carvoeiro & Ferragudo’s Exclusive Retreats: Praia do Padre Vicente is a truly discreet cove near Carvoeiro, while Praia do Torrado in Ferragudo offers a serene spot reflecting the area’s authentic fishing village feel.
  • Lagoa’s Iconic Cliffside Gems: This is classic Algarve. Praia da Marinha is an icon for good reason, its dramatic arches framing turquoise waters. Nossa Senhora da Rocha sticks to mind with its picturesque white chapel and a famous tunnel connecting two golden bays. Cova Redonda is kiss and don’t tell, an intimate experience.
  • Albufeira’s Secret Passages: Further east, beyond the well-trodden paths of Albufeira’s main beaches, lie true marvels. São Rafael offers dramatic rock formations, but it’s Ninho de Andorinha where you step into a wonderland through a literal “keyhole” archway, unveiling a top secret cove.
  • Praia da Falésia: A vast canvas of deep golden sand stretching for miles, dramatically backed by towering, stratified red and orange cliffs. It’s the grand scale of the Algarve, perfect for long strolls.
  • Vale do Lobo and Ancão: Approaching Faro, these expansive, golden stretches are where luxury meets the Atlantic. Think refined sands, understated elegance, and ample space for the discerning Quinta do Lago type of traveller.
  • The Ria Formosa Islands (Culatra, Armona, Fuseta): For those who prefer their paradise unspoiled, these barrier islands in the Eastern Algarve offer pristine, car-free expanses of white sand. Accessible by local ferry, they provide a tranquil, authentic escape towards the Spanish border.
